Chapter 30: Different
“Maybe we shouldn’t go. Maybe we should just… stay here,” Kaleb said while his lips grazed over the side of Scarlett’s slender neck. His hand crawled up to her breast, and he cupped it. “You look so smoking hot tonight. I’m afraid every man at the event will try to steal you away from me.”
Feeling his hot breath against her neck, Scarlett had goosebumps all over. It took everything within her to smack his hand away, saying, “Behave, Mister Wright. Don’t you forget how your friend has called you several times today.”.
“Maybe I can stay behind, but you need to attend his birthday party,” Scarlett proposed. “Besides, whatever makes you think I’m that hot?”
Looking at her dress, she bit her lip. She sneered and said, “I don’t know about this, Kaleb. I’m not cut out for this. Me and elegant dresses never go hand in hand.”
Scarlett was looking at herself in the mirror from inside Kaleb’s bedroom. She was wearing a golden metallic dress that had one shoulder drape sleeve. The gown flowed down to the floor, perfectly hugging her slender body. A long slit going up to her mid-thigh flaunted her pale and long legs.
A frown formed on Kaleb’s face. He asked, “What do you mean? The entire time you were with your real parents, you never had a chance to join these kinds of parties?”
Scarlett fell mute. She gulped and answered, her voice uncertain, “I did for over a year, only occasionally, but on our eighteenth birthday, I was banned from attending any more parities, including that very day, our very own birthday celebration – Courtney and 1.”
She turned to Kaleb and tugged on the collar of his suit, explaining, “A day before our grand introduction a s the daughters of the Barnes, my mother, found Courtney’s gown in my room, cut into various ways. I don’t know how it happened. Now, looking back, I firmly believe it was Courtney.”
“I denied it, of course, but because it was in my room, my parents doubted me completely,” she added.” And that was just one of several incidents where I was accused wrongly.”
“Courtney was the only one who was introduced to my parent’s business partners and family friends. I, on the other hand, celebrated my birthday in the corners of my room with.” Realizing who she was about to mention, Scarlett swallowed her thoughts into her throat.
“With?” Kaleb asked, his eyes narrowing at her.
“With my ex-best friend.” She turned red, recog w the man’s temperament changed. Forcing a smile, Scarlett reached for Kaleb’s hand and said, “That was a long time ago. Whatever friendship we shared was gone. Erased.”

“Hmmm.” Kaleb cupped her chin. He claimed, “I hate that you had years of friendship with Luca, but I can never take away the memories of your past.”
His other hand wrapped around her waist as he suggested, “But I can assure you, now that you are with m. e, together, we can make more emotional, momentous, arresting.” For a moment, he clenched his jaws before resuming, “Unfading, the most uproaring memories.” Scarlett giggled at that point, but Kaleb was not finished yet. He declared, “I’ll give you the most stirring, stimulating, impassioned nights in bed.” “I’ll take you to places you have never been before and experience the most out of this world adventure you never thought possible. It’s going to be awe-inspiring, completely unforgettable.” ay get it. I get it!” Scarlett laughed hysterically, that the corner of her eyes watered. “I get it! Geeze!”
“But those are words, Kaleb. Walk the talk,” Scarlett challenged.
Kaleb winked at her and promised, “I will definitely walk the talk.”

Arriving at a huge mansion of the Dylan Li, Scarlett’s heart was racing. Her eyes caught the sight of several models and celebrities, one she could only see on billboards and magazines.
“Your friend is in the entertainment industry?” Scarlett asked, turning to Kaleb.
“He used to model. We did it at the same time. Now, he owns a modeling agency,” Kaleb revealed. “That’s why you see many familiar faces here.”
Holding her hand, Kaleb said, “Don’t be so nervous. You are with me. And don’t worry, they don’t bite.”
The party was held on the second floor of the grand mansion. A huge outdoor pool faced the estate’s extensive front lawn and several tables were scattered across the lounging areas.
As Scarlett and Kaleb walked through the crowd, Scarlett could feel eyes on her. From the corner of her eye, she saw women giving her flerce looks, a few whispering to each other, all while giving her a side glance. Most men around were carefree. A few smirked her way, but when they saw she was with Kaleb, they were quick to look away.
“Kaleb! Finally, the man shows up!” A man with Chinese features approached Kaleb. His arms were up. suggesting he warranted a hug.
“Dylan!” Kaleb called. He accepted the embrace from Dylan while keeping his hold on Scarlett’s hand.
“Thank you for coming, Kaleb. It would really be good to catch up.” Dylan suggested. He stepped back and then he turned to Scarlett. His brows raised and said, ‘This must be the woman you were telling me about?”
“Dylan, this is Scarlett Barnes, my girlfriend,” Kaleb introduced. “Scarlett, Dylan Li.”
“Mmmm.” Dylan beamed at Scarlett, his hand extending to hers. He greeted, “It’s nice to meet you, Scarlett. You have such fair skin, exquisite eyes, and long, shiny, dark brown hair. Have you ever considered becoming a model.”
“She is going to be a lawyer,” Kaleb cut him off.
“Wow! Nice!” Dylan remarked, his eyes widening at Kaleb. “Different, this time.”
“So.” Turning to Scarlett, Dylan asked, “How are you dealing with Liam?”
“Hmm?” Scarlett raised a brow, puzzled. “What about Liam?”
“I mean. How is your relationship with the boy?” Dylan asked.
“We are good. We get along very well,” Scarlett answered casually.
“Liam loves Scarlett,” Kaleb proudly announced, his lips formed into a smile. “You should see him when h e is around her.”
