The bite sent a shiver through Estrella, who quickly pinched Jason’s waist in retaliation. Despite the pinch, Jason far from let her go. Instead, he pulled her even closer into his embrace.

On the other end of the phone, Kristin couldn’t help but beam with joy, her voice bright and cheery as she inquired, “Estrella, you must be swamped with the year-end rush, right? Jason’s been just as busy. I haven’t seen him around in a good while.”

Estrella found herself at a loss for words. After all, when Jason wasn’t working, he was with her. Trying to change the subject, she asked with a light laugh, “Did you need something?”

Kristin, seizing the moment, cut straight to the chase: “Estrella, you’ve come back this year, so why not spend New Year’s with the Nelson family? Plus, ever since you’ve been away, Jason hasn’t celebrated New Year’s. He’s been as elusive as a ghost.”

Before Estrella could respond, Kristin continued, “If you don’t come, I’m afraid he’ll be all over the place again and won’t make it back.”

Estrella understood what the Nelson family meant very well and was deeply moved by their acceptance of Isaac without knowing his identity.
