Chapter 393 - I didn’t save Luna Oriana

Flashback.

A few days earlier, right after Voren and Seraphine had left, Corvine had finally started looking forward to getting some decent sleep.

The day had dragged on forever, and all he wanted was to collapse into bed and shut the whole damn world out for a few hours.

But fate had other ideas, because the second he thought about turning in, his inbox started blowing up with one urgent email after another.

By the time he’d slogged through them all, a deep knot of irritation had settled heavy in his chest. He fired off replies to the most pressing ones, but there were still way too many left demanding his attention.

It was obvious he’d have to drag himself into the office first thing in the morning. The thought made him drag a hand down his face in frustration.

Then he remembered the promise he’d made to little Esperanza. The kid had lit up like a Christmas tree when he told her she could tag along to the office with him, and there was no way in hell he was going to let her down.

Before he finally called it a night, he decided to check on her.

The house was dead quiet as he padded down the hallway. When he gently pushed open the door to her room, his whole face softened at the sight.

She was out cold, one little arm wrapped tight around her stuffed toy while her blanket had gotten all twisted up around her legs. Her chest rose and fell in that steady, peaceful rhythm, completely lost in whatever sweet dreams kids have.

A soft smile tugged at Corvine’s lips. She looked so peaceful. He carefully pulled the blanket back over her, making sure she was tucked in nice and warm, then slipped back out as quietly as he’d come in.
