Mr. York looked up and saw the assistant with a distressed expression. He knew she worked Miranda, so he extinguished his cigarette and tossed it into the trash. "Is the company empty?" he asked. He owned an entertainment company but had an executive CEO to handle day-to-day affairs. There were also others to handle matters when necessary.

The assistant replied, "Even if there are many people in the company, Miranda still needs you. And your phone has been unreachable."

Mr. York did not want to hear more of this. He frowned. "Is there anything else?"

The assistant wiped away tears, but they kept streaming down. "Miranda's old illness has relapsed. Yesterday, she had a performance, but she couldn't hear and had to cancel.
