How much he wished he could’ve been there that sweltering summer day, to shield her from those two dogs rushing up to her, to show her that there were people in this world who would help and love her.

Estelle didn’t struggle, but fended off the man’s advances with a composed expression. He was more unsettling than the dogs behind him.

Soon, the elevator stopped at the sixteenth floor. The woman holding the dogs sneaked a peek at the entwined couple before taking her dogs and leaving.

Once the elevator doors closed, Estelle immediately stepped out of the man’s embrace and turned to face the elevator doors.

Jonathan leaned against the elevator wall, his gaze never leaving her retreating figure.

The elevator stopped again. Estelle stepped out with Jonathan following close behind.

She entered the password to open the door. The moment it opened, she darted inside and slammed it shut with a bang.

Jonathan, left outside, was speechless.
