Jessica stepped out into the hallway and quickly dialed Sallie's number. As soon

as Sallie picked up, Jessica hung up.

She swiftly typed out a text message.

"Has Timothy picked you up yet?"

"Yeah, he has."

Jessica immediately sent another message.

"Henry just had his appendix removed. Can I trouble you to come help take care of him?"

Sallie's stomach twisted in irritation when she saw the message.

"Jessica, are you out of your mind? He's your own son shouldn't you be the one looking after him? Now you want me to do it for you?"

It wasn't that Sallie didn't want to see Henry.

On the way back, Timothy had already filled her in on what happened. It had been a grueling journey, over ten hours on the road. She'd just wanted to go home, take a shower, change clothes, then go check on Henry.
