Chapter 344

The woman standing before him, laughing manically with a wicked smile, was pushing Jareth to his limits. Every word she spoke, every move she made, was a slap to his face. It was hard for him to believe that this woman was his little sister.

When did she become like this? When did his darling sister, whom he had pampered and protected, transform into this uncontrollable, fallen demon? “Answer me, Edith. Who is pulling your strings?” Jareth roared, his voice filled with desperation and anger.

“No one is controlling me, Jareth. No matter how many times you ask, my answer will remain the same,” Edith retorted, slowly standing up, smoothing her designer dress and flirtatiously flicking her long, wavy brunette hair.

“Jareth, I am about to marry your best friend and become the first lady of the Abernathy Group. You know how Thad is. Despite your attempts to introduce me to some wealthy suitor, I’ve always loved Thad. I would marry no one else. Aren’t you happy for me? You used to be my doting brother. Was that all a lie?”

“Edith, what on earth are you talking about?” Jareth felt a sting in his heart with every word she said.

“Oh, right. You’ve found someone new to replace me. I guess I am not as important as Evadne, am I?” Edith laughed hysterically, tears streaming down her face.

“Mark my words, Thaddeus will never marry you. Don’t get your hopes up!” Jareth gritted his teeth. “And Marilla was never your enemy. She is.”

“My future sister–in–law? A dimwit as my sister–in–law?” Edith laughed contemptuously. “Even if I accept her, Mom and Grandpa will never allow a Fairhaven to marry into the Abernathy family. You better face reality, Jareth. No matter how much you love her, she will always be a mistress, a secret you keep hidden in the shadows. I bet Mr. Frederic would rather die than let his daughter marry you.”

Jareth’s heart ached, his breath hitched. “My marriage is my business. I don’t need you or anyone else meddling in it!”

“Right back at you. My marriage is none of your business either.”

Edith, not wanting to waste her breath arguing with him, strode towards the door, massaging her bruised arm.

“Edith, you are to return to Aetheria on tonight’s flight: Without my permission, you are not allowed back in Elmsworth!” Jareth’s eyes were filled with anger and disappointment.

“Jareth, do you really think you can still control me at this point?” Edith leaned against the door frame, her chin held high in defiance. “Grandpa asked me to stay with him until I get married. When I marry Thaddeus, do you think you can boss me around? Think again.”

“Edith.”

Jareth took a deep breath, his handsome face pale with anger. “Once you step out of this door, from this day forward, I am no longer your brother!”

Edith’s eyes were cold and emotionless, as if she were a stranger.

“If my own brother can’t support me, then I don’t need him!”

Rumors spread rapidly in Elmsworth, and the scandal of the wealthy family was far more intriguing than any tabloid gossip. After all, people love a good downfall story.

Evadne, however, had no time to concern herself with these rumors as she had more pressing matters to attend to.

“Evadne, you are incredible!” Aaron and his sister sat with her in the corner of the Hotel’s café.

Aaron spread a few photos in front of her. “Just as you predicted, that criminal had a secret room filled with pictures of Elspeth. It seems he is not the fanatical admirer of Myra as he claimed. He is clearly obsessed with Elspeth.”

Evadne pursed her lips and lowered her voice. “Aaron, did you find any other significant clues?”

Aaron hesitated before pulling out a plastic evidence bag. Inside it was a platinum necklace studded with diamonds, the design was dated and the quality subpar.

Evadne had an excellent memory. She thought she recognized the necklace and quickly began flipping through the photos.

“This necklace is the same one Elspeth used to wear. There are even photos of her wearing it. It’s identical,” she said, pulling out a photo.

Evadne’s keen eye even impressed Aaron, a seasoned detective. “Evadne, you’re wasting your talents not being in my line of work!”
