Chapter 349

The grand hall was as silent as the grave, Evadne’s presence radiating an icy dominance that seemed to put everyone on edge.

This kind of intimidation was no less intimidating than that of Barry, a notorious figure in both the legal and illegal trades.

Elspeth, who had initially been grinning in anticipation of some juicy drama, was taken aback. She had assumed that Evadne had come to confront Thaddeus, having heard rumors of the Fairhaven family’s proposal to him. She thought Evadne was simply here to fight with Edith over Thaddeus.

Elspeth had been looking forward to a good old–fashioned catfight, but was left speechless when Evadne announced that she was there to see her.

“Ms. Evadne, you’re looking for me? I don’t think we have any issues with each other, do we?” Elspeth asked, trying to laugh it off but unable to hide the surprise in her eyes.

“Any issues between us ended the day Thaddeus and I got divorced,” Evadne replied nonchalantly, her tone devoid of any emotion. “But your issues with an old acquaintance of yours are far from over.”

Her words, seemingly light, were like a depth charge, leaving everyone in the room stunned.

“Edith! What is Ms. Evadne talking about? An ex–wife? What’s going on?” Barry demanded, his face a mask of disbelief.

“Grandpa. I mentioned it to you, don’t you remember?” Edith reminded him timidly.

“Mentioned it? When did you mention this? I may be old, but I’m not senile! When did you tell me that Thadneus was divorced?”

Barry, who had spent most of the year abroad, was unaware of Thaddeus‘ marital history. He hadn’t known that Thaddeus had been married and divorced before, and that his ex–wife was Emeric’s daughter!

A feeling of having been deceived began to grow in him.

“Mr. Barry, what’s the big deal about Mr. Thaddeus having a divorce?” Alva, who had been tolerating Barry’s nonsense up until now, finally snapped. “Mr. Thaddeus is a catch. even if he were to get divorced eight times, there would still be women lining up to marry him! Besides, doesn’t your granddaughter want to marry Mr. Thaddeus too? If she doesn’t mind, why do you?”

“Who gave you the right to speak, you old hag!” Barry yelled angrily.

“This is the Abernathy household, not the Fairhaven household. I can say whatever I want, and it’s none of your business.” Alva replied coldly, turning her back to him dismissively.

Barry hissed and was left fuming, but arguing with a maid from another family was beneath him.

Frederic, who had been keeping quiet, felt a surge of satisfaction when Alva stood up to Barry. He might not like Thaddeus, but Thaddeus was still his son. He could criticize his son, but others could not!

Thaddeus took a deep breath, his heart pounding in his chest. He walked over to Evadne, lowered his voice and said, “Evadne, if you have something to say, say it to me. I can help you.”

“Are you afraid I’ll ruin your good thing?”

Evadne’s long eyelashes flickered, her gaze as cold and sharp as ice. In a voice only they could hear, she reassured him, “Don’t worry, I won’t delay your meeting with the Fairhavens. I’m only here for Elspeth. Once I’m done talking to her, I’ll leave.”

“I told you, if you’re in trouble, I’ll help you,” Thaddeus insisted, his eyebrows furrowing, a complex emotion swirling in his dark eyes.
