Chapter 565

“Was it Matthew who set the whole thing up?”

“It’s not out of the question. And because of this, Mr. and Mrs. Chambers‘ marriage fell apart. Mrs. Chambers, unfortunately, dragged Avery into it, who was already the black sheep of the family. He was banished to Helgen, left to fend for himself for fifteen long years, forgotten by everyone. Mrs. Chambers‘ health deteriorated over the years, and Avery, without the backing of the Chambers family, barely got by financially. Life in Helgen was tough, to say the least.”

Evadne looked surprised, “Are you actually defending your rival?”

Thaddeus chuckled, “No, I’m just stating facts. Right is right, wrong is wrong. Even if he’s my enemy, I won’t blur those lines.”

Evadne was moved and wrapped her arms around his neck, planting a quick kiss on his lips.

It was this honesty and openness that made Avery fall short in comparison.

“So, can you blame him for harboring hatred? If I were in his shoes, I’d do whatever it took to come back and avenge my mother,” Thaddeus said with a distant look in his eyes.

“But that’s still no excuse for the path he’s taken.”

Evadne still shook her head, “Besides, if he wanted revenge, he should have gone after the Chambers family directly. Why harm you, Cassius, and Debby? When he was in Helgen, he must have known Darcy was my brother–in–law! He claims to care for me, yet he ruthlessly persecutes my family behind my back. Just because Cassius didn’t like him, in Star Island, he even conspired with Eden to take Cassius out without anyone noticing. He’s miserable, so he wants everyone else to suffer with him. Anyone who doesn’t fall in line, even those dear to the people he ‘likes,‘ he’s willing to put them in harm’s way! How many more bridges does he need to burn before he’s satisfied? He’s too selfish, too cold–blooded!”
