I Am Unstoppable
Chapter 316
Mabel was slipping in and out of consciousness, but her eyes immediately flew open at Jonathan's appearance, and she looked at him weakly.
She had no idea what was going on in the outside world and asked in a feeble voice, “Are we all dead?”
He took one look at her and knew she wouldn't be able to hold on for long, so he turned to shout at Jeff, “What do we do now?”
Jeff managed to laboriously push himself up. He was recovering at an alarming rate despite his severe injuries. He took out the gilt bronze bowl from his ring and gave it to Jonathan. “Use this to catch baby ghosts and feed them to Mabel.”
Jonathan hurried to him, accepted the gilt bronze bowl, and stated hesitantly, “How do I do that?”
Jeff was struck mute, almost forgetting that Jonathan had no mana. He conjured his residual mana and imbued it in the gilt bronze bowl.
When Jonathan looked at the gilt bronze bowl again, which was emitting a golden glow, there were already ten baby ghosts inside.
He cradled it and approached Mabel, patting her face hard a couple of times, calling out, “Here are some baby ghosts, Mabel. Whether you live or die depends on your ability to consume them.”
Mabel tried to focus her bleary gaze on what was in Jonathan's hands and finally had a good look.
Her eyes lit up with the determination to live. She miraculously sat up, folded her legs, and swallowed a baby ghost with what little strength she had.
The baby ghost resembled a child but would transform into dark energy to be used by Mabel once ingested.
She consumed ten baby ghosts in a short while, and her condition noticeably improved.
With help from Jeff, Jonathan immediately hunted for more baby ghosts.
The cacodemon waited and observed patiently by the sidelines.
Mabel ingested close to fifty baby ghosts within two hours, during which the dark energy in her brain was almost done refining pure energy.
She seemed vitalized, her eyes glinting with vigor, and soon, she could capture baby ghosts herself and consume them speedily.
The first light of dawn broke through the darkened sky an hour later, sending rays of the rising sun across Pinelake Mountain Forest.
Mabel had devoured close to two hundred baby ghosts, and the dark energy in her brain altered into mana, surging in her body.
Her cultivation stage leaped from Divine Master Level One to Level Two before continuing to Levels Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, and Eight!
In the end, she became a Level-Eight Divine Master, just one stage below the masters in Divine Realm.
Mabel shot to her feet, and the Infant King's primordial spirit was no longer a threat to her at that point. She immediately released and refined its primordial spirit.
An aura rippled around her, and pure vital energy swirled in her eyes.
Jonathan and the rest stared at her, exhaling a breath of relief when they realized she had grown much stronger.
Jeff and Beatrix's injuries were mostly healed after a few hours of resting and recuperating.
They gathered around and exchanged glances, overwhelmed with emotions.
The emotional rollercoaster from tonight's near-death experiences was too much to handle. Such memories would be imprinted in their brains for the rest of their lives.
“In that case, we owe a lot to this little guy, huh?” Mabel eyed the cacodemon beside Jonathan.
Jonathan stroked its head and answered, “That's right, we would all be dead if it weren't for this little guy.”
Jeff couldn't deny that.
But how should we deal with the cacodemon?
Jeff had many reservations. He reflected on the fact that it was he who had brought the cacodemon into this world, and he was the division chief of the Department of National Security. His status was a delicate subject.
The cacodemon was already formidable, and its powers would only grow with time.
He would be responsible if it ravaged Thymion, but suggesting to kill the cacodemon now would be inappropriate.
Firstly, he wasn't strong enough to kill it. Secondly, Mabel, Jonathan, and Beatrix would never consent to the plan. Thirdly, Jeff found it hard to justify his decision. The cacodemon had saved them, and he was going to return the favor by killing it in the name of eliminating a public threat?
“Let's go,” Jeff said instead of suggesting that the cacodemon be exterminated.
The rest nodded without a second thought. Jonathan, especially, couldn't care less about anything else. His mood had improved now that Mabel was out of the woods.
Beatrix, on the other hand, found the Demon Slayer blade that had flown away and kept it in her storage ring.
They trod out of Pinelake Mountain Forest and re-entered the military jeep, with Jonathan in the driver seat.
The sun shone brightly overhead, with shafts of light breaking through the leaf canopy that was gently rustled by a soft breeze. The passing scenery seemed like something out of a movie.
The cacodemon sat quietly in the passenger seat while Jonathan drove. It would bare its teeth ferociously when someone tried to touch or approach it. Only Jonathan was allowed to get close to it.
They arrived at Yaleview three hours later at eleven in the morning.
The car slid to a stop in front of Pearl Building, and Jonathan decided to bring the cacodemon to meet Zoe.
Beatrix got out of the car and announced without beating around the bush, “Jon, Mabel, Chief Yount, it's been a while since I left, and no one's been taking care of Master. I should go now that Mabel is fine.”
Reluctant to part with her, Jonathan tried to change her mind. “You should stay a couple more days, Beatrix, and we will give you a proper tour of Yaleview tomorrow. What do you say?”
He truly loved and respected her from the bottom of his heart.
Mabel chimed in, “Yeah, Beatrix. You should give me a chance to be a gracious host.”
They had forged an everlasting bond, especially after the harrowing ordeal they lived through these few days.
“We will meet again in the future. Besides, a thousand miles won't be able to keep us apart with technological advancements. We have plenty of time and opportunity. Come and visit me in Lostaria when you're free,” Beatrix replied with a smile.
Jonathan, Mabel, and Jeff stopped trying to persuade her, seeing as she had already made up her mind.
“Beatrix!” Jonathan went to her and enveloped her in a bear hug without saying a word.
She understood the wistfulness and affection he poured into that wordless hug and patted his shoulder, saying, “Don't act rashly in the future, fool. Learn to cherish your life.” Then, she turned on her heels and left in a composed, insouciant manner.
Mabel stared at her, immediately understanding what Beatrix meant. She glanced at Jonathan, gratefulness and warmth overflowing from her eyes.
She met Jonathan and befriended him with no ulterior intent, but she never imagined that decision would reap such rewards.
Mabel realized that cultivation and strength weren't her greatest gift; it was having Jonathan as her friend.
Jeff did not say much and only heaved a small sigh after Beatrix left. “Let's head in.”
“Okay!” Mabel agreed.
Jonathan took the cacodemon's hand and said, “Let's go.”
They entered Pearl Building and went to the brightly lit underground base.
“Zoe is resting in the room over there. Bring the cacodemon to her,” Jeff told Jonathan.
Jonathan gave him a nod and led the cacodemon to the aforementioned bedroom.
