I Am Unstoppable

Chapter 347

That evening at six, Mabel arrived at Yaleview, and shortly after, she went to Pearl Building to meet Jeff.

Unlike Mabel, Jeff was not so concerned about the cacodemon matter. After all, the trouble was Thymion's, so he did not see it as a mutually dependent issue.

In fact, even the commanders were reluctant to get involved.

The central government was willing to provide some assistance, but only under the condition that it would not harm the people of their nation.

Jeff said to her directly, “Mabel, I've made the higher-ups' position on this quite clear. The current matter doesn't have much to do with you, Jonathan, or us, so you shouldn't worry too much.”

The light in Mabel's eyes dimmed slightly, and she did not know what to say for a moment.

While she did not wish to witness Wretched going on a murdering rampage, she did not feel any sense of urgency because she was currently far from Mapleton.

However, she quickly remembered that Jonathan was still in Mapleton. He's been doing his best. I can't just stand idly by.

“What exactly do the higher-ups mean?” she asked Jeff.

“Their message was crystal clear. Wretched the Great is something that can't be controlled. If we don't have total confidence, we can't provide assistance to Mapleton unless we can find out what it is, and there's that expert who can surely eradicate it. Only after these two conditions are met can we help them out.”

“Do you have a way of finding out Wretched the Great's background, Chief Yount?” asked Mabel.

“Jonathan was right,” Jeff replied. “Wretched the Great is a product of Thymion, so it's a little challenging for us to find out anything about it here. However, my senior, Adonis, is a resourceful person. He has been traveling around the world, and since he has recently returned to the country, why don't we go together and ask him if he has heard anything about it?”

“Why don't you call and ask him first if he's heard of it?” Mabel suggested.

Jeff's expression was an odd one when he heard that. “If I could call him, I would've done that long ago. Adonis never uses a phone, and nor does he travel by plane. He travels to every country without an ID card or a visa.”

“If not by plane, does he travel by boat?” Mabel asked in confusion.

“Exactly,” he replied. “He doesn't carry money or anything wherever he goes. The only thing he carries is a bowl, which he eats and drinks from. And he doesn't wear shoes.”

“He's a true ascetic!” Mabel could not help but exclaim. “What does he eat, then? Does he beg on the streets every time?”

Jeff shot her a glare. “Nonsense! Adonis is such a proud person. Do you think he's willing to beg on the streets? He gives people fortune readings and treats illnesses in exchange for food.”

The image of Jeff's senior appeared in Mabel's mind—a ragged-clothed ascetic strolling toward the horizon in the shadow of the setting sun.

She asked curiously, “How did you know that he's back, then?”

“Are you dumb? What department are we in? The Department of National Security. What is it responsible for? Mostly intelligence! My subordinates reported it to me.”

Realization dawned on Mabel instantly.

Soon after, she urged, “Let's not waste any more time and go meet Adonis right away.”

“He's currently in Azure Temple on Mount Wallore. I'll get a private jet ready first. Do you want to rest tonight and go there tomorrow morning, or shall we go there now?”

Without a second thought, she answered, “Let's go there now.”

Jeff took another look at her before asking, “In the past, you and Jonathan wanted to save the cacodemon out of good conscience. I can understand that. But now that it's free, this is its fate, so why do you two still care so much about it? Mabel, we are mere mortals, not the heroes and immortals in the novels. Why then?”

Mabel was momentarily taken aback. “I wouldn't go as far as to put my life on the line for the crisis in Mapleton. But since I've encountered it, I should still provide some assistance even if it is out of human sympathy.”

“What you're doing is putting your life on the line. This isn't just providing some assistance,” Jeff argued.

Mabel said, “People are inherently kind. Even if you encounter a bird injured in a storm, you should still lend a hand to help.” Jeff chuckled bitterly at her words before commenting, “Although I'm someone who practices Destino Art, I've grown more indifferent over the years and taken the growth and destruction of things very lightly unlike you and Jonathan, who are very passionate.”

“Actually, it's impossible to say who is right or wrong. If you look at it more thoroughly, flowers bloom and wither, and so does the natural progression of human lives. But there's no point looking beyond that. A woman wearing gorgeous clothes would invite many beautiful dreams. It can be romance, or you can be crazy about it. But once she removed those clothes, you'd lose all those feelings. It's like eating and drinking. In the end, they will become nothing more than excrement. And we seem to have been brought to this world to make our way toward death.”

Jeff breathed a quiet sigh. “Feelings like lust and obsession are what drive human nature. Some people lose themselves in them and are unable to escape. On the other hand, I'm seeking the path that lies beyond life and death. Despite how far away it is, I must still try.”

Mabel chuckled. “When all you're after is immortality, why did you make it sound so sophisticated? Whether it was the first emperor, Emperor Waylon, or the subsequent emperors, they were all after the same thing. Yet, no matter how powerful they were, they ultimately couldn't escape death. But you're different, Jeff. You're likely to succeed because you understand the natural progression of human life and the detailed circulations of the body. Moreover, those Chanaean emperors had already paved a way for you, which is akin to immortality.”

“Those emperors were seeking the immortality of the physical body, which is wrong. Our bodies will decay and age. This is the course of nature and cannot be transcended. Only the primordial spirit is the way to immortality,” he explained.

“Indeed, the way of the primordial spirit can achieve immortality. However, considering our present cultivation levels, even if we managed to cultivate a primordial spirit, it would perish along with our physical bodies. There's still a very long and difficult way to go in making the primordial spirit everlasting.”

Jeff nodded. “Yes. This is exactly what I'm seeking.”

Mabel smiled. “We've gone a little far off-topic. Though I think you're right, I don't think I'm wrong either. Pursuing immortality and saving the world aren't conflicting matters.”

“That's true,” Jeff concurred. “I'll have someone make the necessary arrangements for us to travel to Mount Wallore as soon as possible. I worry that Adonis would abruptly leave again due to his unpredictable whereabouts.”

“We better hurry, then. By the way, Jeff, Adonis' cultivation level must be very high, right?”

A strange look flashed across Jeff's eyes as he replied, “He attained Level Three Divine Master very early. Back then, he spent some time in Divine Realm and acquired numerous elixir pills there. He later found this pace of progress to be too slow, so he separated from the realm.”

Mabel could not contain her astonishment. “Separated from the realm? What do you mean? Are you saying that he left the Divine Realm and is no longer a part of it?”
