"I grew up an orphan," Noreen replied with a gentle smile. "Many of the kids at Star were abandoned by their parents. But there are also people who give up everything—their jobs, their former lives-to come here for their own children. And while they care for their own, they open their hearts to those left behind by others."

Briony fell silent.

She turned to Carey.
