An hour later, the light above the operating room finally went out.

The doors swung open.

Stewart rushed forward before anyone else. "How's Bryn?"

Stella, who'd been crouched in the hallway for so long that her legs had gone numb, tried to stand but couldn't quite get up.

"She's out of immediate danger." Dr. Cedric Clarke removed his surgical mask and hurried over to help Stella to her feet. Seeing how swollen and red her eyes were from crying, he let out a weary sigh. "She'll need to stay in the hospital for a while."

Stella clung desperately to his hand. "Will she recover? Cedric, you're the best there is. Tell me you can fix this. Please."

"I'll do everything I can," Cedric replied gently. He knew exactly what Stella wanted to hear, but as a doctor, he couldn't make promises he couldn't keep.

After so many years of marriage, Stella understood the real meaning behind Cedric's words.

He would do his best-but there were no guarantees.

Tears streamed down her cheeks again. "Why does this keep happening to Bryn? Why is she always the unlucky one?"

"Star, I know you're upset, but you need to stop crying. Your eyes are badly swollen, and if you get too worked up, your mom will have words for you when she comes back-"

"Bryn's lying in there and you're worried about my eyes?" Stella punched his arm in frustration. "Cedric, do you have any heart at all? Your son can have formula if he needs it, but Bryn-Bryn only gets one life!"
