Eric huffed in anger. If he had known that Jack would do this to him, he wouldn't have been so arrogant.

Rachel laughed derisively. "You can't even talk to me confidently?"

By now, she knew him well. If he spoke to her in a pitiful or flattering tone, it meant that he either felt guilty about something or wanted something from her.

Rachel couldn't afford to let him get away with it like she usually did, so she said lightly, "What I said that day wasn't a joke. Don't try to coax your way out of this, Jack."

She knew for a fact that this was not Jack's usual demeanor. He was just intentionally repressing his temper and putting on a pitiful facade to get her sympathy.
