So much for doting on Shirley and treating the child in her belly as if it were her precious. In that case, let's see if she comes to her senses when I end her.

“I-Impossible. The child in Shirley's belly has to be a Shurmer. There's nothing you wouldn't do to help your disciple, is there? How could you concoct such lies to deceive me? I'm your mother, Bailey!”

Bailey chuckled.

Mother? How dare this woman stand there and proclaim herself my mother? Ah, well. She's just one of many people in the world who think highly of themselves. I've been around long enough to have come across people like that. There's no need to stoop to her level.

“To tell you the truth, I never saw you as my mother because you're not worthy.”

Because you're not worthy.

Waverly shuddered at those words before staggering backward.

She only managed to steady herself by propping her back against the door.

She gaped at Bailey, and her gaze dimmed in an instant.

“If it was your disciple who was involved with Zeke that night, as you said, how did Shirley get pregnant? She insists that it's his baby and is so sure of it to the point of suggesting a paternity test. Surely she couldn't be lying?”

Sneering, Bailey proceeded to tell Waverly about Shirley's attempt at IVF, and how it had been foiled by her own mother.

The news proved too much for Waverly. Unable to support her own weight, she slumped against the door. Then, her legs gave way, and she slid down to the floor.

“How could this be? Why would she do that? I doted on her. Trusted her. Why would she lie to me?”

Bailey sighed inwardly. She gazed up and found Zeke standing at the door, his face impassive. His presence prompted her to recall her motive for coming to the Shurmer residence.

Arriving before him, she drags him out of the waiting lounge.

Zeke studied her with a frown. “Why didn't you heed me when I told you not to come? You may not be as lucky in another accident! Who's going to bear the consequences if something happened to you?”

Bailey gave a smile, which did not extend to her eyes. “Artemis would have sent people to protect me had he not lost his memory,” she replied coolly. “He's in Hallsbay now, and would not stand and watch harm come to me.”

Zeke scoffed. “So, we merely stood and watch harm befall you before because he wasn't in Hallsbay?”

Hearing that, Bailey rolled her eyes. What's wrong with him? Why is he being so confrontational? I didn't even provoke him.

“I'm going to be very upset if you keep talking like this.”

Zeke chuckled in spite of himself. “Sounds like you are the one being touchy. Spill it. What happened?”

Upon arriving at the subject, his eyes narrowed. A sense of foreboding loomed in the back of his mind. “Could Lionel have...”

Not made it?

Bailey shook her head. “Lionel is currently stable. Despite the damage to his heart, he remains alive and kicking. It's Julie. That truth of her being pregnant with the Shurmer family's child has been exposed.”

Zeke froze. He cast her a puzzled glance. “What then? Has she been cast out?”

It does make me anxious to hear that something has happened to her. She likes me and she's even carrying my child now. Besides this messy relationship aside, she's also my sister's disciple.

“I will contact them and ask that they protect her. When this tide is over, I'll pick her up and bring her back to Hallsbay.”

Given the current precarious predicament in Hallsbay, it was not a good time for her to return. It was safer for her to remain elsewhere instead.

Pursing her lips, Bailey gave a bitter laugh. “If getting banished was the only thing that happened to her, why would I personally come and see you, or be this worked up, for the matter? According to the spy within the Hoffman family, the head has locked her up and is preparing to hold a meeting to discuss aborting the child before subjecting her to life imprisonment. She would never set foot outside the house ever again.”

Zeke's gaze turned cold. A hint of hostility appeared between his brows.

Gentle and friendly by nature, he often appeared easygoing.

The sudden change in his demeanor shocked even Bailey.

She was well aware of his status as the head of the prestigious family most renowned for their medical prowess which had enterprises scattered all over the globe. The power and prestige he possessed were equal to Artemis'.

The Hoffman family has hurt his woman and is making plans to kill his unborn son. Of course, he is going to take action.

“Zeke...”

Zeke's fury subsided a little. “Don't concern yourself with this,” he said lightly. “I will deal with the head of the Hoffman family. Don't worry. Nothing will happen to your disciple or the child in her belly.”

Bailey chuckled. “I'll leave this to you, then. Besides, I'm a little overwhelmed. It's your woman and your child. You should be the one coming up with a way to save them.”

I don't think the head of the Hoffman family would dare act rashly, anyway. If Zeke expresses his insistence on keeping the child, even the Hoffman family would have to consider their next move carefully.

“Let's head back to the medical base. Lionel is not out of danger yet, and his condition is subject to change. Also, I worry Luther Group's medical team cannot manage it in Justin's absence.”

Zeke nodded.

The pair was about to leave when Waverly dashed in.
