Juliana clenched her fists tightly.

Can I really fight my way out of this?

No... I need to become stronger and break out of this prison. That way, I can take Huntley with me and leave this vile place once and for all.

“Fine. I'll be good and recuperate. You must also give me your word to get your injuries checked out and undergo treatment. Once I've met Master, I'll beg her to save you,” Juliana said before slowly leaning into Huntley's ear. “If you recover fully, I promise to stay with you forever. Even though I don't love you now, there's no telling what will happen in years to come. For all you know, my feelings for you might change.”

Huntley chuckled. “Okay.”

Deep down, however, he remained unmoved and refused to hold out any hope of Juliana falling for him.

Well, it's only proper that I support her in her pursuits, especially now that she's intent on leaving the Hoffman family... It's time for her to take control of her own happiness.

Meanwhile, in a ward at the medical base, Bailey was gradually regaining consciousness.

Time seemed to stand still the second she opened her eyes, but it wasn't long before the pain in her limbs snapped her out of her daze.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Bailey also realized she couldn't lift her arms when she attempted to prop herself up on her elbows.

Oh, dear... Has my body gotten that weak?

It took a great deal of effort before she finally put her right hand onto her left wrist, and by then, it was clear from her vital signs that her body had been pushed to its limit.

Ah, well... I expected this. Instead of resting since my miscarriage, I've been exerting myself and working around the clock. To make matters worse, I even stood in the snow for over an hour, all cold and drenched. Is it any surprise that my vitality's severely affected? Besides, the adrenaline shot might have kept me alive, but it also caused further damage to my already ravaged body... From now on, there's no doubt I'll become more susceptible to getting sick and be ridden with several long-term effects.

Upon turning toward the window, Bailey saw a tall, slender person on the other side of the glass.

It was the man she had always longed for, and the more she stared, the more she lost herself in him.

In the past, she had heard many stories of how women would fall in love with Artemis and even throw themselves at his feet.

That, of course, only made her sneer in disgust. After all, why would any woman be so dumb as to go crazy over a man? Was that worthwhile?

However, now that Bailey finally experienced Artemis' tenderness, she realized she had fallen head over heels in love with him.

If Artemis Luther had never existed, my life would be incredibly dull and dark. In fact, I can't even imagine living without him...

“Artemis...” Bailey uttered, her voice soft and sweet.

Even though one couldn't hear anything from outside the ward, Artemis couldn't shake the feeling that Bailey was calling out to him and instinctively reached for the door handle.

For some reason, however, he suddenly stopped in his tracks.

I-I don't know how to face Bailey...

She was such a happy and free-spirited woman, yet she was robbed of her peaceful life ever since she fell in love with me. Not only did she have to endure the suffering that fate threw at her, but she was turned into a delicate and fragile beauty. Oh, Bailey... She's one of the most amazingly talented women, but life just had to play a joke on her and deal her a bad hand. How can I bring myself to face you in your fragile state?

Upon seeing Artemis' hesitation and reluctance to step into the ward, Bailey curled her lips into a bitter smile.

He still can't let go of his guilt, huh? Even though he didn't personally hurt me, he still finds it hard to face me... Oh, what a silly man. He's probably blaming himself for everything.

The next second, Bailey's gaze fell on the phone beside her bed.

She grabbed it with much effort and slowly keyed in the number that she knew only too well.

After a couple of rings, she saw Artemis taking out his phone and accepting the call.

“I used to be very assertive and wanted to be the best at everything I did. Therefore, the past few years have been akin to living in hell,” Bailey said, her voice now low and hoarse. “Artemis, the truth is I've never had a strong personality. I was a pitiful kid and was constantly bullied by my stepmother and stepsister. I suppose what they say about a mother's strength is true. Once I became a mother, I knew I needed to protect my children, so I forced myself to get stronger. Because of that, everyone saw me as a confident and authoritative woman. It wasn't until I met you that I realized women could also show their weaknesses and rely on others. Do you know what's interesting? Rather than being my usual domineering self, I prefer leaning into you and seeking comfort in your embrace. That's because you're the only one who gives me a sense of security... You're the only one I can fully trust and depend on.”

Artemis trembled as he listened intently. After a brief silence, he finally spoke up. “But I still failed you eventually, and your life was never the same again. Not only did you suffer a miscarriage, but you've also destroyed your health. All these happened because you chose to be with me. I've failed to give you a happy life... Sometimes, I wonder if it's a mistake to let you stay with me.”

Bailey tightened her grip on the phone, her eyes brimming with tears.

“What do you mean by that, Artemis? Are you dumping me? I'd die without you.”

Artemis turned around abruptly as tears began streaming down his cheeks.
