Artemis picked Bailey up bridal-style.

“I'll bring you to the ward. Be good and stay there. We can talk after you've recovered.”

The latter pursed her lips. “If I don't recover, are you going to ignore me for the rest of our lives?”

Her words caused him to tense up.

Only then did Bailey realize that she had exposed herself. She internally scolded herself for being stupid before saying, “I'm fine. I'll get better after resting for some time. Artemis, are you planning on being like this forever? You only see the harm you've caused me but fail to see how happy I am to be by your side. Everyone is envious of me for having so many identities, an endless amount of fortune, and your unconditional love. However, I don't think my identities and wealth are worth envying. Instead, I want them to be more envious of your love for me. Artemis, we've finally escaped danger. We don't have to walk on eggshells for the rest of our lives. Can't you just be happy and forget all those terrible things?”

Artemis slowed to a stop as his gaze fell on her.

After a few days of rest, Bailey's face had regained a healthier glow. She did not look as pale as before.

However, from her cracked lips, Artemis could tell that she was still sick and weak. She had lost her dominance and sharpness from when they first met.

In the end, the reason she had become more gentle and soft-hearted was... him.

“Bailey, what should I do to guarantee your safety? How can I make you live without any worries? I seem to always be causing you harm. Whether I issued an order to kill you or was forced to bed Yvette... or the day I ignored you in the snow, causing you to catch a cold and end up getting this frustrating illness. All of these did happen. How can I ignore all my wrongdoings?”

Bailey was amused. She raised her head and gently kissed his lips before asking softly, “Did you do all these on purpose?”

Artemis shook his head. “It hurts a hundred times more to hurt you than hurting myself.”

“There's that, then. It's not like you did it on purpose. Why would I blame you for it? Artemis, if you continue ignoring me, I'll listen to your son's suggestion and live with Raiden for the rest of my life.”

Artemis narrowed his eyes. “Zayron gave you that idiotic idea?”

Bailey giggled. She never expected that she would betray her son to coax a man.

“That's right. That brat wants me to be around Raiden more to make you jealous. You'll stop ignoring me if you're jealous.”

Artemis smiled, but it was an exasperated smile.

He continued to make his way out of the door. “All right. I'll remember that brat's words and punish him later.”

Bailey snuggled into his chest and listened to the rhythmic thumping of his heart. In a muffled voice, she said, “I don't want to have any strings attached with other men, nor was it my intention to use that to provoke you. Artemis, please don't distance yourself from me. I can't be apart from you.”

They had just left the study when Alfred rushed over.

“Mr. Luther, Ms. Jefferson, Mr. Revelle would like to invite you over. He said Ms. Veronique's condition has taken a turn for the worst.”

Bailey quickly struggled in Artemis' embrace so he could put her down.

“What happened to Vero? Hasn't her condition been stable for the past two days?”

“Something happened all of a sudden. Her heart stopped beating for a moment, and she was sent to the emergency room.”

Bailey said nothing more as she asked Artemis to help her toward the emergency department.

Not long after, they arrived outside the emergency room.

Bill, Yvonne, and Zephyr were waiting outside, looking as pale as paper.

Bill was in tears when he noticed that Bailey had arrived.

“Ms. Jefferson, you must save her. Vero has suffered so much over the past few years. She had only just cured her son, yet now she has to deal with something like this. It hurts me to see her like this.”

Bailey frowned. “Why did her heart suddenly stop? Did someone provoke her?”

Yvonne stepped forward and passed the phone to Bailey. “Ms. Jefferson, please take a look at this.”

Bailey grabbed the phone and read the message displayed.

It was a message from Scarlett. She texted: Veronique, I'm pregnant with Justin's child. But don't worry, for I'll also replace you to become his wife. After you pass on, I'll love your son as though he is my own.

Attached with the message was an ultrasound image.

Bailey tightened her grip on the phone.

F*ck. I forgot to tell Veronique about this.

Veronique must have misunderstood that Scarlett had gotten pregnant because the latter and Justin slept together.

However, that was not the truth.

Bailey knew better than anyone who was the father of the baby in Scarlett's womb.

“Don't misunderstand Justin. The baby in Scarlett's womb is not his,” Bailey explained after seeing the expressions on Bill's and Yvonne's faces. She then strode toward the emergency room.

That afternoon, Olivia brought Scarlett to attend a charity event.
