Chapter 19: Test Subject No. 16

“Bring up subject no. 16,” Dr. Sorren told Gato the next morning. As he opened the door to the cell section, Gato remembered that he had left subject no. 16, aka Midori Sato, handcuffed and gagged in her cell. It was not usual to leave a subject ball gagged all night unless she was very noisy. He wondered if she had suffered much.

She was lying on her side, and she did not open her eyes until he touched her arm. She blinked, took a second to realize where she was, and then glared at Gato. Ignoring her baneful look, he lifted her to her feet and then slung her over his shoulder. In the lab, he laid her out on an examining table.

“Why is she gagged?” Sorren asked when he came over.

“She was too loud last night,” Gato lied.

“Very well then. You may take it out now.”

The gag came off, and the unfortunate girl did not seem able to close her jaw for a while. The pained expression on her face clearly told that it was an unpleasant experience after having her jaw forced wide open all night. She glared at them as if she would happily rip their faces off had she not been restrained.

“Can you talk?” Sorren asked. Gato translated.
