Chapter 630 Someone Came To Pick Me Up

Maverick gazed at Lysander, his eyes brimming with reluctance. His voice was filled with emotion. “Having such an exceptional daughter like you is the proudest achievement of my life. Even though it has. been many years since you got into medical school, my old buddies are still envious every time I mention it”

Maverick always regarded Lysander as his pride and joy. With a nostalgic tone, he confessed, “I know I’m vain, but I can’t help bragging about you wherever I go. After all, my Lysa is just that amazing.”

Lysander attempted to squeeze out a smile to reassure him, but as soon as the corners of her mouth began to lift, her eyes welled up with tears. It took all her strength to hold them back.

Maverick understood her thoughts and gently said, “Honestly, I have been at peace for a while now. I’ve been quite content these last few days. If there’s anything I’m worried about, it’s that you might be so focused on taking care of your mother and sister that you forget you’re still a young girl who needs care herself.”

“Dad, I’m almost thirty. I’ve grown up a long time ago…” After Lysander had barely managed to utter these words, she broke down completely the next second. She collapsed in front of him, crying uncontrollably.

Maverick’s strength was nearly depleted, yet he managed to lift his hand to gently stroke her hair, just as he used to when she was a little girl. “Even if one day you’re in your seventies or eighties, to me, you’ll always be my little girl.”

“Okay, don’t cry, Lysa. As a doctor, you should understand the cycle of life and death better than anyone.

Everyone will face this day, and I am fortunate to depart without any regrets. Just promise me, gone, you will take good care of yourself. Don’t overwork yourself.”

He had barely spoken a few words when his throat began to tighten intermittently. If he hadn’t been at death’s door, he might have been unable to hold back his tears.

The door to the ICU was pushed open from the outside amidst Lysander’s cries.

Josiah stood by the door, casting a glance at the father–daughter duo. With a hidden sorrow he couldn’t conceal, he stepped aside, making room for Michelle to push in Laura, who sat in the wheelchair.

Laura had only fainted for a brief moment before she woke up, fueled by her concern for her husband. However, the news that greeted her was devastating, leaving her no choice but to let her daughter guide her to her husband’s sickbed.

Laura completely fell apart. “You jerk! Why didn’t you tell me?”

When Maverick saw his wife’s haggard appearance, so different from her daytime self, he felt guilty. “I’m sorry, Laura,” he said. “I know there should be no secrets between a husband and wife, but I was truly afraid of seeing you crying. Please, forgive me this once.”

“Maverick, I’m not blaming you, but why, just why…”

Maverick reached out, gently taking Laura’s hand and softly said, “If I had known that our marriage would lead to so many years of hardship, perhaps I shouldn’t have pursued you. Maybe you and the children would have been happier than you are now. But it’s too late to say these things. All I can do now is to delay your sorrow a bit longer. Promise me you’ll be okay.”
