Chapter 380

Avery's POV

Damn. That felt... good. I knew it shouldn't. At the end of the day, Fiona was young, and she was a product of a father who basically sold her off to an older man. I was aware of that. But then again, I had been through a world of shit at her age and I didn't insult people for no reason, so... there was that. Also, the look on her face-first confusion, then realization, then the distinctive pink cheeks of humiliation-was too satisfying to feel bad about what I had said.

Maybe it meant she had learned her lesson about belittling her elders, especially during business meetings. The hallway was silent now. Sebastian and Claire, who had previously been having their own discussion off to the side, turned to us and watched.

Aldric drew in a sharp breath. Fiona was trembling, clearly furious, her manicured nails digging into Gideon's bicep. I maintained a polite smile, although I did glance at Gideon, half expecting him to tell me off for insulting his future wife. Surprisingly, though, he didn't.

In fact, I could see the barest hint of a smirk tugging at one corner of his mouth. Did he... agree with me? Before anyone could say anything, the sound of a spaceship toy suddenly echoed through the house. Bjorn came barrelling down the stairs, holding his new toy that Sebastian just bought for him over his head and making pew-pew noises.

When he saw Gideon standing there, he gasped, then-much to my chagrin-he slid down the railing and dropped down at the bottom, thankfully unharmed.

"Mr. Gideon!" he said, rushing up to him and holding his toy out.
