Chapter 374

Avery's POV

The smell of antiseptic burned my nostrils. I heard machines beeping around me, and fluorescent lights flickering faintly behind my eyelids. For a moment, I thought I was in hell, or some kind of purgatory. I always hated hospitals.

They were too loud, too sterile, too chaotic. My wolf could always sense the pain around me, too, and it distracted me and made my chest ache. It didn't help any, either, that the drugs in my system were making it hard to breathe.

With a groan, I cracked one eye open, then the other.

It took a moment for my vision to adjust, but when it did, I found myself laying in a hospital bed. An IV was in my left arm, and a monitor was around my right index finger, hooked up to a machine that was beeping steadily beside me.

The room was dimly lit, the overhead lights off. The bright hallway was all that provided illumination. I was alone. Briefly, panic overwhelmed me as my mind raced to recall what had happened. But it didn't take long for the memories to come rushing back-the drink, the fogginess, the bartender trying to... I blocked that part out. The rest was pretty much a blur.
