At the time of John’s call, they had just found a basement under the bank, but the place had been emptied out. Nevertheless, they saw a piece of bone in the basement, which didn’t look like it belonged to an animal.

John was startled as he didn’t expect that they would find this surprising lead, hence he told them to bring the bone back so that he could have a look. After that, he would try to come up with the next move.
