Chapter 121: The Lies

Leon’s POV

A low groan came from my chest, sounding more like a wounded animal than a man. My body felt completely wrong—heavy, stiff, and disconnected, as if I had been buried under a pile of wet dirt all night. I forced my eyes open, squinting against a morning light that felt much too bright, stabbing at my eyes with a painful glare. My room was never this bright; I usually kept the heavy curtains closed tight against the world.

My thoughts were slow and foggy, drifting through a thick haze until I noticed something that made my heart pound against my ribs.

Hair.

Chocolate-brown hair was spread across the white pillow beside me. For one dangerous second, hope flared... Scarlett. But as soon as the smell hit me, the dream shattered. It wasn’t the fresh, earthy smell of rain, vanilla, and woods that belonged to my mate. It was thick, sweet, and choking.

Lilies.

My stomach turned as my mind cleared. Every instinct I had screamed that something was very wrong. Beside me, Talia moved. She sat up slowly, holding the sheets to her chest with shaking fingers. Her eyes were red and swollen, like she had been crying for hours.

"What are you doing here?" I rasped, my confusion deepening. I struggled to sit up, my head spinning. "How did you even get in here?"

Talia flinched, a fresh wave of tears spilling down her cheeks. "Leon... don’t you remember? You opened the door for me. You said you couldn’t be alone anymore. You were so... so desperate for someone to hold." She looked at the bed, then quickly looked away. "You... you don’t remember anything?"

I didn’t answer right away. My eyes scanned the room, landing on three empty whiskey bottles scattered across the floor. A bit of doubt tried to creep in—Did I actually do this?—but then my wolf snarled. It was a loud, angry sound in the back of my mind, hating the very air in the room.
