Kingsley imperceptibly gave the children a meaningful look. Thankfully, Gavin and his siblings were bright enough to understand what they should do next and proceeded to distract the adults at the table.

“Old Mr. Watts, I want some of that!” Jesse said softly, sounding so endearing that the adults around her could not help wanting to indulge in her every whim.

“All right, I'll get it for you,” Victor said tenderly as he gave her a helping of the dish she had pointed at earlier. He loved spoiling her.

Delighted, Jesse said politely, “Thank you, Old Mr. Watts!”

Her dimples could melt even the coldest of hearts.

“I want some of that, too, Old Mr. Watts!” Jasper said.

“There's plenty more to go around.” Victor gave Jasper a helping, too.

“We want some, too, Old Mr. Watts!” the other kids chorused. At once, Gerald and Emily quickly gave them helpings of the food. They were happy to see the children dine so heartily.

“Ah, it feels good to be left alone!” Kingsley sighed in relief.

Having taken pleasure in his friend's misfortune earlier, Shaun smirked.

“Do you really have a girlfriend?” Kingsley suddenly asked, curious.

Shaun gave him a look. He decided to continue with his pretense and nodded solemnly as he said, “Yes.”

Kingsley's jaw dropped, but he refrained from exclaiming in shock this time. Instead, he pressed in hushed tones, “Who? Is it somebody I know?”

D*mn, when did Shaun get himself a girlfriend? More importantly, how did he keep this from me?

“You don't know her,” Shaun said. That much was the truth. I don't even know her myself.

“Let's all go out together sometime!” Convinced, Kingsley nudged Shaun playfully and chided, “Wow, I can't believe you got some action even though you spend your days living in your lab. You're not seeing someone from work, are you? A fellow doctor or a nurse at the hospital, perhaps?”

Now, that would make for a plausible theory.

After all, who else would cross paths with Shaun every day aside from those who worked at the hospital?

Shaun made no reply and carried on eating, leaving Kingsley to make his own guesses.

After dinner, the adults could not wait to spend time with the six children, who did not let Kingsley down and kept everyone happily occupied.

They were ecstatic to have received monetary gifts, too.

Later that evening, Shaun got a call from Benjamin. Initially, Shaun thought it might have something to do with Arissa, but it turned out Benjamin only wanted to know when he would be going back to the hospital.

Glancing at the time, Shaun had a feeling that Benjamin must have something to attend to, so he said, “I can go back now.”

“All right. We'll talk once you're here.” Benjamin hung up after that.

Shaun told Kingsley he was leaving. “Boss wants me to get back to the hospital. I think something came up. You coming?”

As he spoke, he appraised Kingsley in an almost roguish sort of way, and Kingsley could not help but feel that he had been challenged.

With a roll of his eyes, Kingsley said, “Go ahead without me. I'm busy, and I don't think the kids will be leaving anytime soon, either.”
