Zeke grimaced.

Right as he was about to retort, a voice came out of the radio, “Ms. Bailey, there's an ambush, and there is quite a number of people around.”

Bailey had her head lowered as she used her phone while listening to the mother and son's argument. When she heard Andy's report, she pursed her lips.

Here they come. Good. I was afraid that they wouldn't show up.

“T-There's really an ambush? S-Someone's really out to k-kill you?” Waverly asked in a shaky voice.

Bailey spared her a glance and uttered in an indifferent voice, “What were you expecting? Did you really think that I enjoy having this many people tagging along?”

Waverly gulped before shooting out her hand to grab her son's arm. She hissed, “Why did you come out with her if you knew that there was going to be an ambush? You should have stayed at the medical base!”

A hint of fury flashed across Zeke's face.

She's only concerned about me? What about Bay? What if something happens to Bay if I didn't come with her?

However, when he lifted his head, he saw the smile on Bailey's face. He froze.

He knew that there was sadness in her bright smile.

Bailey Jefferson was not a cold-blooded creature. No matter how trivial the concept of parents was to her, she still could not avoid feeling upset to see the lack of concern her mother was for her.

“Bay...”

Bailey lowered her head a little and shoved her phone into her pocket. She then cut him off by saying, “Let's get out of the car and meet them.”

Zeke nodded and opened the door on the other side of the car.

At that, Waverly snatched Zeke's arm and cried out, “You'll be caught in the crossfire, so stay right here in the car.”

Zeke used his other hand to peel her hand away.

“I'm a man. If I need a woman to cover me right now—if I'm going to make a woman face the battle outside—then I'm nothing but a coward.”

Waverly fell silent.

Knowing that she could not convince her son otherwise and worried that he would be hurt or worse, she steeled herself and came down from the car as well.

I shouldn't have come. My son's life is more important than a baby who hasn't even come into this world yet.

After Bailey got down from the car, Andy hurried over to her.

“Ms. Bailey, I'm glad that we've installed ultraviolet detectors. We found high-tech explosives buried around us.”

Bailey lifted a brow. “Are you saying that there are explosives nearby?”

“Yes. Perhaps the other party thinks that there are too many of us, so they're planning to wipe us all out with something destructive like explosives.”

Bailey narrowed her eyes. Right as she was about to take Andy's binoculars, a piercing sound resonated in the air.

“Watch out!” Bailey shouted before launching herself toward where Waverly was standing.

A bullet brushed past her arm and splattered drops of blood.

Another gunshot sound rang out. Zeke killed the sniper who was hiding in one corner.

When he turned around and saw the bloody state of Bailey's arm, he grimaced.

“Bay, your arm...”

“I'm fine. It's just a scrape.”

On the other hand, Waverly's heart was still thumping loudly.

If not for Bailey lunging toward her, that bullet that scraped Bailey's arm would have gone through her skull.

Bailey had saved her.

Despite her harsh and infuriating words, she's still worried about me. What a pity she never grew up around me, so I never developed any maternal love for her. If I have to choose between her and Zozo, I'll still pick Zozo.

Zeke held Bailey and suggested, “Go inside the car first. You're too easy of a target if you stand out here.”

Bailey shook her head and frowned. “This isn't right. Why is there only one sniper? If it's who I think it is, then they shouldn't be sending only one sniper.”

Zeke mulled over it. “Could it be that someone has wiped them all out? Moreover, this sniper isn't from that person. This sniper's from Tarragon's headquarters.”

Bailey tilted her head to look at him. “Who's annihilating all of them so discreetly?”

“Me...” came the deep voice behind them. It was a familiar voice for Bailey.

She instinctively turned, only to be greeted by the sight of Raiden in a black coat walking toward her. Immediately, she figured out what was going on.

Right, this man has military power. He can go anywhere he wants. Any one of the soldiers from the troops would be able to restrain all of the assassins that person sends out.

“I thought you were busy settling Scarlett's matter.”

Raiden smiled, but that smile disappeared when he saw the blood on her arm.

She gets hurt quite frequently, doesn't she?

With that thought in mind, he took off his coat and draped it on her shoulder.

“There's nothing as important as your safety in this world. It's cold out here. You should be wearing more layers. Also, be more responsible and don't let yourself get hurt so often.”

Bailey was speechless.
