Bailey chuckled coldly. I've lost all patience with her. I didn't block that bullet for her earlier out of an overwhelming sense of sympathy. I'm no saint, so there's no way I'd put my life on the line for her after how she has treated me. I only did it because of the shred of blood tie between us and because I knew I could withstand such an injury. Had it meant endangering my life, I wouldn't have done it.

“All right. I'll check the bodies first. After I figure out what happened, I'll go to the Shurmer residence to attend to Shirley.” After saying that, she shrugged Waverly off, thinking about how the latter had never considered her as her biological daughter. The truth was Waverly had grabbed Bailey's injured arm earlier. Due to the force of the motion, it ended up aggravating the injury. She wouldn't have pulled on my injured arm if she cared about me. Even if she had been in the heat of the moment, she would've avoided it. No matter how I think about it, it's clear to me that she doesn't care about me at all.

Seeing that Bailey was not kidding around and was about to leave, Waverly panicked and quickly said, “Very well. I agree to let him move the bodies to the Shurmer residence. With Shirley's current condition, we can't afford to delay any longer. Come with me to attend to her first, okay?”

Bailey ignored her and looked at Zeke, thinking that if he did not want the child, then she would not go. She could not care less about Waverly's feelings. Since the latter had never bothered to take any notice of her, Bailey did not see why she should sympathize with her.

Zeke sighed inwardly. I'm afraid there's no choice but to keep the baby that Shirley is carrying. At the very least, we can't let anything happen at this crucial juncture. Otherwise, Mother will surely push all the blame onto Bailey, and they'll turn against each other completely.

“Go to the Shurmer residence. After all, that child is mine. Although the baby was conceived through disgraceful means, there's no changing the fact that it's mine.”

Bailey looked at him without saying a word.

...

Over in a mansion in the suburbs, Sofie was leaning against the living room's floor-to-ceiling windows and admiring the view of the garden while slowly sipping on the glass of red wine in her hand.

Suddenly, the phone in her other hand started ringing. She looked down and saw that the call was from the subordinate she had tasked with carrying out the mission. This call is coming ten minutes earlier than I expected. Could it be that...

Her heart lurched, and she quickly swiped to answer the call. “How did it go?”

“Ms. Carr, the mission failed. Every single person we sent out died. No one survived. We've suffered a debilitating defeat.”

The wine glass slipped from Sofie's hand and fell to the floor with a loud smash. A violent shudder ran through her body. The assassins we sent were all elite suicide attackers. How could they have been wiped out completely?

“What about Bailey? Did you kill her?”

The breathing on the other end of the line grew heavier. After a silence of about thirty seconds, the person replied reluctantly, “No. We could not even last out until her men arrived before we were all taken down.”

Sofie narrowed her eyes and did not say anything for a moment. Then, her expression shifted drastically. “Was it Artemis' doing? He doesn't have amnesia. It's all a show to lure us out.”

“M-Ms. Carr, it wasn't Artemis' men but the military. Raiden Fletcher sent a troop of soldiers, and they captured all of us while barely making any sound. Fortunately, our men were ready to die, so they ingested poison and committed suicide after being captured.”

Sofie squeezed her eyes shut. Raiden. It was Raiden. I was on my guard against Zeke, Edmund, and Simon. Alas, the only person I didn't think of was Raiden. I never imagined that such a big shot in the political circle would not hesitate to dispatch a large number of soldiers for the sake of a woman. That's breaking the law, and he'll have to face the consequences after this. I can't believe he'd go to such lengths for a woman who doesn't love him.

“All right. Got it. Everything will be fine as long as you don't reveal your whereabouts. Go into hiding for now. I'll get in touch with you again when I need you. I made a gross miscalculation in my plans this time, which cost the lives of many of our men. I must kill Bailey to avenge their deaths.”

“Very well.”

...

At Tarragon's headquarters, Artemis swiftly received news from Hallsbay about what happened. He breathed a small sigh of relief upon learning that those behind the assassination had failed in their attempt and had been eliminated instead. It wasn't my wish to put Bailey in danger. However, due to the urgency of the situation and to find out who was behind it as soon as possible, I had no choice but to do so.

Holden noticed the look of unease in his eyes and ventured, “What are you planning to do next? Don't tell me you're thinking of staying here and doing nothing. It's easy to dodge an open attack, but it's difficult to guard against an attack in the dark. Ms. Bailey is in too much danger now. I think it's best if we return to Hallsbay.”

Fiddling with the wine glass in his hand, Artemis was quiet for a while before saying calmly, “Go and summon Mr. Doyle. Just say that the assassination mission is taking too long. Several days have passed without any news, so I'm going to Hallsbay to kill the head of the Saviors myself.”

“Very well.”
