Chapter 390

Avery's POV

I looked at the tray. A glass of what looked like freshly squeezed orange juice, a sandwich with cheese and cold cuts, and a cup with two small pills in it. My mouth watered a little at the sight of the food. Truthfully, orange juice often did help with my migraines-something about the vitamin C and sugar helped soften the pain around the edges. And the sandwich did look good, nice and thick with a crispy lettuce leaf sticking out. I wasn't sure how Gideon knew it would help, but the gesture warmed my chest a little anyway.

But I quickly squashed the feeling before it could take root. I wasn't about to take another "kindness" from him. Not when I knew this was all just an act to convince me to go home with him, where my son would become his heir and I would become the mistress while Fiona took the title of Luna for herself.

"Thanks, but I'm fine," I said, standing.

The moment I did, my head spun, my vision darkening at the edges. With a gasp, I nearly collapsed right then and there as my knees buckled out from under me. Gideon caught me before that happened. For a moment, neither of us moved.

His arms were warm and familiar around mine, and it made all of my instincts kick in. My wolf howled, urging me to press closer, to feel more of Gideon's body against mine.

Already, I could feel my headache beginning to fade away like a cold tide pulling away from the shore. It infuriated me. I pushed against Gideon's chest.

"Let me go, please." Gideon looked down at me with such complete and utter calm that it pissed me off even more.

"Avery, you almost collapsed just now. Do you want to hit your head against the tree?" I pursed my lips. Deep down, I knew he was right.

I felt like shit and I needed sustenance and medicine if I was going to feel better. Digging my heels in wasn't going to help the situation any.

"Okay," I said with some chagrin.

"I'll behave." Gideon's lips curved with amusement at my choice of words, and my face heated. Gently, he lowered me back down to the grass, helping me lean against the tree. He then picked up the tray and placed it on my lap.
