Chapter 389

Avery's POV

An all too familiar car was waiting in Aldric's driveway when I arrived. Gideon was standing beside it, leaning against the door with his arms folded.

The moment I saw him, a pang shot through my temples. Oh, no. I knew that pain all too well. For a moment, I considered turning around and leaving. But I had an appointment today, and Gideon had already seen me, so I had no choice. I clenched my jaw as I put the car in park and climbed out. Gideon was already moving toward me and waving.

"Don't," I said, reaching for my bag in the back seat. He stopped a few feet away.

"Don't what?"

"Just... don't." I grabbed my bag, shutting the car door behind me, and walked past him. I could already feel a headache coming on.

Gideon, of course, followed, which just made another throb shoot through my eyes.

"Are you here just to rub yesterday in or something?" I snapped, not slowing my pace or looking at him.

"What are you talking about, Avery?"

"If you have more gifts for my son, he won't get them this time. I'm not gonna let you try to weasel your way into his life with presents." Gideon looked at me.

"Wait, so you gave the gifts to him after all?" I didn't answer that, but I didn't need to. I was pretty sure that my face gave it all away, because Gideon smiled somewhat, his lips 'tugging slightly upwards at the corners.

"I hope he liked them," he said. Ignoring him, I headed into the clinic, where Aldric was waiting. Gideon followed me, claiming that he was here strictly for business purposes and nothing more. But I knew the truth-he was trying to spend as much time with me as possible.
